The Korean female duo, As One, which consists of members Lee Min-young (Min) and Chae Da-hee (Crystal), have released more than 150 songs in the 15 years since they’ve debuted. Their first song "너만은모르길" (Only You Wouldn't Know), was released in 1999 and the ladies have been creating pop/R&B music for hundreds of thousands fans ever since. Now under the label, Brand New Music, As One is coming back with a more mature sound. They were gracious enough to sit down and answer a few questions for Daebak City. Read on to find out what they think of K-pop’s global popularity and what’s in store for the future!
Being a group from the 90's, what are your feelings about Kpop being so popular now around the world?
You know we used to always say that K-pop would take over the world one day and the fact that there is such a big following around the world, just makes us hold our heads up high.
When we talk about K-pop we're not just talking about the younger generation idols. We're talking about the legends who gave their heart and souls, talent and voices and paved a way for the younger generation. It's been a long time coming for the world to see the beauty in Korean music. We couldn't be more proud to be a part of that.
How do you come up with a song? Do you write the lyrics first or do you figure out the melody first?
We don't write all of our own music, fortunately we are blessed with super talented songwriters who gift us with great songs, but when we do write our music, we make the melody first, and then we write the lyrics accordingly, Usually we will write about what we are feeling during that time period.
Who are your musical influences (Korean and/or foreign)?
Korean, Solid, for sure! They are the pioneers of R&B, also of course Lena Park, we loved Bijous as well... and foreign, we grew up listening to Brian McKnight, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Janet Jackson all the greatest R&B artists.
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with on a song that you haven’t yet?
Since we already got to sing with incredible Bumkey and so many other great artists, we'd love to work with Zion T. He is so amazing and makes every song that much better!
Do you have any future plans for touring? Outside of Korea?
We would love to perform more and be able to meet our fans everywhere, but for now we are just keeping it small and simple and local . We have an upcoming Brand New Music family concert at the end of the year, other than that we will just have to wait and see.^^*
As One recently released the song For The Night, how did you come up with the concept of the song and music video?
Like we mentioned, we are gifted with amazing songs from talented songwriters, and we all wanted to go back to our roots of R&B, We have been doing a lot of ballads and other styles so we kind of wanted to remind our fans of the music we initially started off with and loved. As for the video, we were kind of shocked when we first heard about it but they thought this concept was very fitting for us, since we are now more mature, so we understood the idea and appreciated it for what it was.
Is it hard to balance being married and working in the music industry?
I think we're really lucky in the sense that both our husbands know and respect the fact that this is who we are and what we do. And we are blessed to be part of a label like Brand New Music who understands how important both our music and families are to us. So, no... It is not difficult at all.^^
What is your most memorable moment as a group?
I think it will forever be our very first solo concert back in 2002, we were only on our second album, but the fact that we were able to have our own solo concert for 3 days, all sold out, is still such an incredible feeling and til this day we are super grateful for that memory and to everyone that made it happen.
What can fans expect from As One in the future?
We're going to keep on doing what we do and hope that all the fans continue to support us through it all. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you.^^
Right now we have our English radio program "K-Polpular with As One" on TBSefm and we are continuously working on new music and hopefully a concert in the near future, where we can actually meet and get to know our fans a little better! Thank you for all the love and support!*^^
Is there anything you would like to say to your international fans?
We can't thank you all enough for the undying love and support. It's been over 15 years for us and we are so grateful to be able to keep on putting out music for you, We know that we are no "idol group" keke and that the younger generation may not know our music but we hope that you will be able to appreciate our music and know that we will always work super hard for even just that one fan^^* We thank you, appreciate you and love you!
A huge thank you to As One and Brand New Music for granting us this interview!
